Software Development Manager

Software Development Managers combine deep technical expertise with leadership capabilities to guide major projects and mentor engineering teams. The ideal candidate is able to write high-quality code and develop the conditions for others to do the same. In this role, you’ll drive project execution, shape product strategy, and support your team’s growth, ensuring that both the software and the people behind it continue to scale effectively.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Own and manage software engineering efforts across multiple programs through hands on development and applying your expertise in software best practices
- Review code developed by other engineers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency)
- Meet regularly with individual staff to discuss performance and development and provide feedback and coaching
- Contribute to Software Engineering direction, policy and guidance
- Develop processes and policies for unit testing standards, CI practices, and code quality gates
- Collaborate across teams to ensure software delivery aligns with business goals
- Develop team KPI metrics to communicate progress, identify blockers, and maintain visibility
- Build a team culture focused on first principles thinking,reliability, and continuous learning
Skills and/or Experience Needed:
- BS or MS in CS/CE/EE or equivalent industry experience
- 10+ years of professional software development experience, with at least 2 years in a technical leadership or management role
- Strong C++ (14/17/20) coding ability, with hands-on experience designing production systems
- Deep experience with unit testing frameworks (e.g., Google Test, Catch2) and CI/CD pipelines
- Proven ability to lead design efforts in dynamic environments where requirements are fluid
- Experience with data-driven engineering practices using tools like Kibana, Grafana, JIRA, or similar
- Extensive leadership experience, including definition of software requirements
- Experience in Agile Development process
- Experienced in writing detailed test plans and procedures
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Language Skills:
- Interpersonal skills to effectively work with internal peers as well as working effectively with suppliers and customers
- Ability to effectively present information in team meetingsand design reviews, as needed
Other Abilities:
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in verbal and written form
- Must have substantial reasoning and problem-solving abilities
- Strong analytical skills and solid work ethic
Additional Requirements:
- Must be eligible to obtain and hold a US DoD Security Clearance
Physical Demands:
- Ability to travel up to 5% of the time
- This position uses a computer terminal to access, input, and retrieve data
- This position may be subject to interruptions that may cause a change in immediate priorities and/or work focus
- While performing duties to this position, employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, reach, and/or bend
- May occasionally lift and/or move parts, files or boxes up to 40 pounds
- May be subjected to occasional irregular or extended workhours
- May be required to sit for extended lengths of time
- Must be able to work in an environment that may be subjected to occasional loud noises, hazardous materials and chemicals
